FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE

The objective of functional medicine is to prevent ill health or to restore a patient to optimal health. Functional medicine is a science-based field of health based on the principles of:

• Underlying causes of health conditions such nutritional deficiencies, toxic overload, imbalances in hormonal, immune, inflammatory and/or digestive systems.

• Biochemical individuality.

• Interaction between internal and external factors.

An abundance of research now supports the view that the human body functions as an orchestrated network of interconnected systems, rather than individual systems functioning autonomously and without effect on each other.

HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is a treatment predominantly to relieve symptoms of the menopause, by replacing hormones that are at a lower level at the onset of the menopause. The main benefit of HRT is that it can help relieve most menopausal symptoms, such as hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness, and reduced sex drive. It can also help prevent weakening of the bones (osteoporosis), which is more common after the menopause.

TESTOSTERONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY

Testosterone plays a vital role in a range of bodily functions, including muscle and bone health, cognition, red blood cell and sperm formation, and sexual and reproductive function in males.

Testosterone levels can decline for various reasons, including stress, aging, trauma, and infections.

There are many ways testosterone levels can be restored and prescription testosterone helps to restore the levels of this hormone in the blood, reversing the symptoms of low testosterone. People who take it may notice improvements in alertness, sexual function, energy, mood, and overall well-being. TRT can also help to improve sexual function, including: libido, symptoms of erectile dysfunction, and sexual satisfaction. Research also suggests that TRT can help to maintain bone density.

GUT HEALTH

Overwhelmingly, research indicates that gut health impacts overall health. The gut microbiome, in particular, plays a critical role in mediating the effects of diet and other factors on health, including digestive, immune, metabolic and neuroendocrine functions. Assessing GI health with the proper tools can help practitioners get to the root cause of chronic illness.

HAIR LOSS

Hair loss generally occurs due to the sensitivity of hair follicles to androgens. This is the most common cause for hair loss in 70% of men and 40% of women. Men usually develop recession of the hairline at the temples (receding hairline) and baldness at the top, whilst women present with scattered thinning of the hair at the top of the head.

Although there is no cure for hair loss, a number of treatments can slow or reduce hair loss, stimulate partial regrowth or replace damaged hair. Surgical hair transplantation can help some men who have advanced balding.

WEIGHT LOSS MANAGEMENT

Having obesity or overweight is a serious health issue associated with some leading causes of death, including heart disease, stroke and diabetes, and is linked to an increased risk of certain types of cancer. Losing 5-10% of body weight through diet and exercise has been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with obesity or who are overweight.

At Thrive our doctors can advise on nutrition and suitable treatments to aid weight loss & maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Traditional Chinese and Herbal Medicine

Underpinning Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the concept of a smooth flow of blood, energy and fluid. The principal action of acupuncture is to re-establish that flow, thus alleviating pain, tension and stiffness. It also releases pain-relieving endorphins, triggering the release of anti-inflammatory chemicals in the body that modify the experience of pain – this immediate release helps promote a rapid healing response. And there is much more to acupuncture than simply healing our aching muscles; studies show that it can be used to reduce stress, and improve sleep, focus and concentration.

GENERAL PRACTICE

Our General Practitioners are here to help manage the health and wellness of the whole family. This includes not only the treatment of acute and chronic illnesses, but also the provision of preventive care and health education. We at Thrive Wellness believe that by ensuring that our patients understand their conditions as well as the management of them, they are better equipped to reach and maintain a state of optimum health.

Our GPs can also focus on disease screening and prevention and they take the time in each consultation to elicit the individualised requirements of each patient.

As a patient in a consultation with our practitioners, you can expect to have an initial discussion on your current state of health, your medical and family history, immunisation and allergy status.

All new patients have their basic vital signs checked such as blood pressure (BP), heart rate, and weight.

Our GPs believe in thoroughly discussing the history of any of your current health issues or complaints, in order to pay special attention to your specific concerns. This is followed by a directed physical examination.
